interview with Archangel

Lotus: When was it that you first realized that art was a permanent part of your life?
Archangel: At age 4. I drew a darlek out of Dr. Who and everyone loved it.... I knew then that I was to draw to impress.... that was my drive. I love my talent and I love people’s reactions to it.

Lotus: So then it is safe to assume that you get your self-satisfaction from outside as well as from within?
Archangel: Yes I do... I need the flow of encouragement. It is what drives me. Sad maybe but I fear all artists draw and paint to impress.

Lotus: When you are in the creative process...don't you gain satisfaction from that as well?
Archangel: Of course I feel the painting or image... I wrap myself into it and almost do it subconsciously after it is complete and when I have criticized it and can find no error I am satisfied. Only then… I never find perfection in my work Lotus, ever, I strive for it and I may be very happy with a piece.... but there is always a little niggle that you have ...this pushes you on also

Lotus: Tell me Archangel.... what is it that inspires you?
Archangel: Hmmmmm Women. And beauty... beauty from within...nature and the natural world

Lotus: Why do you create art?
Archangel: I feel the need Lotus, badly.... I need to draw and create like you need words. I have given up my job that is really well paid to create ...it was stifling me and depressing me.... art lets me breathe I need to create to live

Lotus: What was the hardest thing you ever had to create...the most challenging...?
Archangel: The hardest thing I ever painted was a self-portrait.... Not a normal portrait but a portrait of emotion...You see I had this project to do a self portrait while at Uni and it was the day after my Nan died.... I couldn't do it but I needed to.... I forced myself and can still see the image... The face was drawn and gray I could feel the depression in my face as I looked in the mirror... Gods it was hard...Took me fucking hours but after it was done I cried and relief was amazing... I had a top grade for it and the weirdest thing is I have kept it.

Lotus: Wow, now that is a touching story. Art can be difficult at times for it does come from with in. Tell me, if you had one bit of advice for new artists...what is it you would tell them?
Archangel: You must draw what you feel emotion is everything in art. It is like the painting for you Kimber, Lotus Fey. For you have to draw and feel what you draw... You must not worry about likeness or realistic... It is about creativity colour and emotion. A brush stroke can say so much when it is laid down in the way it was laid down... Anger gives good results kind of like the pic I did for the hope page ... you have to see the anger in the painting.

Lotus: Do you prefer digital or traditional art?
Archangel: I have drawn on the Mac for a good few years now and the funny thing is that at Uni I was studying to be an illustrator and did both Graphic design and Illustration specializing in Illustration I was set dead against computers for art in the literal sense...preferring the feel and texture of a canvass or paint...Yet upon leaving Uni I became a Graphic designer by trade ...more for money than anything else and now I see that art in the digital sense can reach much wider audiences than a canvass painting could and also the way that you work on the Mac makes it easier to delete or scrape areas or layers.... you have to scrape off oil with a blade lol

Lotus: You have been a part of the Mac community for many years...so I want to touch just a bit on any feelings you may have on the difference between people in this community as opposed to the PC communities...Since this is a Mac site...lol...Any parting thoughts on that?
Archangel: The part of a Mac user in the world of computers is in the creative sense. We are all great craftsmen and women of the broadest sense whether music.... words.... visual... and with art comes feelings and emotion, mainly good as you will see if you belong and live and breathe within the Mac community... we are people worth knowing. Look around you Kimber we are blessed by such wonderful dreams that we all share. We are one.
Archangel: Where the PCers start they finish. They come to work in their suits and ties and drink 40 cups of coffee a day and sit looking at numbers and maybe go home and watch the football on TV... they don't live in the literal sense they have no creativity and love to share... That is why Mac users are Mac users ...we create and what better platform to do it on.

Lotus: Thanks for sharing your insight with us. You’re a very wise person. And I am sure that those reading this will also enjoy your Featured art this month. Congrats on Being NC’s Artist of the month.
